Washington Roberts showcased his Latest Trends

New York-based Nigerian designer, Washington Roberts has carved an niche for himself in the international market. He left the shore of Nigeria upon collection of his high school and faced with the unique challenges in the USA, was able to create a niche. Welcome to the world of contemporary fashion designer, Washington Roberts.
From a very young age, Roberts began the hobby that would later become his career and passion. Born in West Africa on January 12, Washington was raised by his grandmother, Beatrice, a devout seamstress whose influence on Washington would later impact his life and his career. Beatrice’s attention to detail, steady hand and highly coveted seamstress skills were absorbed and practiced by young Washington, who adored his grandmother and watched her carefully. Throughout his childhood and to this day Washington’s grandmother has always been the biggest inspiration for him.
Inspirations for his Latest Collections
My latest collection has been designed and crafted entirely by me. For this collection, photos of beach rocks inspired me. The shape and the layering of the stones on top of one another made me think of drapes. The textures of the beach rocks also induced me combining different fabrics together. Fabrics such silk and wool, silk jersey and Crepe back satin silk.
All colors used were colors of the rocks. I also envisioned that the wearer of my designs, the women who are strong and beautiful as the rocks on the beach, would bring life to the sensuous and colorful creations that I have designed. I hope you feel as inspired by my designs as I have been while creating them
His Bio
Although fashion was always a big part of Washington’s life, it was never in his career agenda. Washington attended Igbobi College Yaba in Lagos, Nigeria and upon graduation relocated to the United States to continue his graduate studies. While studying chemical engineering, He decided to start designing clothes as a hobby. His first piece was a blazer for himself to wear on his 23rd birthday party. The jacket was a hit amongst the party guests. It was the topic of conversation throughout the night, and a wake up call for the designer who realized that his true passion and talent was in fashion.

In the past few years since his 23rd birthday party, Washington has featured his designs in numerous New York fashion shows, several issues of Hype Hair Magazine and on Envision Style & Substance during NYC Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Washington takes pride in all of his creations and picks the finest materials and the best colors. He designs pieces that compliment the women’s body and accentuate

As Lagos State count down to its maiden carnival April 3, two talented designers, Isio Wanogho, a model, creative artist and designer; Odun Orimolade, a fashion designer and lecturer in Yaba College of Technology, are pouring out their creativity to design carnival wears.
For the two up-coming designers, designing carnival clothes and max producing is their first attempt. Orimolade shares her view, “I have always loved costumes. This is actually my first time of designing carnival wears and mass-producing at the same time, I have always done costume wears. There is a big different between fashion and costume. Most designers don’t dabble into costume wears; expect for few designers that have flair for experimentation.”

Isio Wanogho added, “ when I was contacted, I did some research into what carnival costumes look like, looked at the ones that experiment my creativity and what I produce and create something new and different. This is actually my first attempt.”
Speaking on what inspires them to create such a unique, yet classy designs, Wanogho said, “I like beautiful things, I desire to create something beautiful, put something together and create what people will love, wear and admire. It’s seeing a simple thing in my mind, putting it together and it comes out extra ordinary. They have something of me in them. For females, my costumes are very feminine, and I believe a woman should always be a women when it comes to dressing.”
Orimolade spoke on her inspirations, “. I like exaggeration and it lead to something new, different and trendy. I have an idea of Victorian skirt and I exaggerate it, it turns to a new style. I m working with people from the skill centre, it’s been an eye opener. How much they are ready to learn is inspiring.”
Both Wanogho and Orimolade disclosed that they source their fabrics from the local market. According to them, they use less expensive materials that are very details and experimental.
On their challenges, Wanogho spoke, “It is one thing to see something and like it and it is another thing to produce that thing you desire in your mind. Another major challenge is getting the right man power, in terms of tailors costume is different from normal wears and all the rigid rules In fashion don’t comply. In carnival wear, the louder, the better.” Orimolade adds, “ one of the challenges I face is medium is the time frame. We are doing what other people, countries, states take a whole year to plan.”
Orimolade stated, “ I try to cover space. I just got a call. There is a big difference between fashion and costume designers. Most fashion designers don’t dabble into costume wears, only designers that have a flair for experimentation.”

On A.D.E runway

By OYINDAMOLA LAWAL
A WOMAN wants to look her best and is willing to try almost anything to enhance her appearance. You can make any outfit jump from ho-hum to fabulous just by supporting and enhancing your natural curves.
From the sexy and seductive to simple and sweet, intimate and appealing fabrics were showcased at the African Design Expo (ADE 2009), which held from November 7 to 10 at Expo Hall, Eko Hotel and Suite, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Models showcased fabrics made into mouth-watering styles, which include lace, leopard print, chiffon, ruffles, satin, sheer, hosiery, wedding lingerie, chemise, new wonder bra, frills, men pants and tights to mention a few.
Also on display were two-piece sets to mix and match, tights, corsets and one-piece.

FROM Patience Torlowei of Patience Peace Lingerie, the best of lingerie was on display from the formed and fitted to push up and control, no seam or full seam, and the ultras — this and that.
Also, from the ever-popular thongs to bra straps in a myriad of colours and bold patterns, the barely visible and clearly visible, Peace Lingerie made bold statement as they shone through the thin fabric of blouses, cotton shirts and lightweight sweaters.
The show was really an opportunity to change perception of African fashion. It was a month to see the creativity of African designers.
According to Queen Ahneva Ahneva Adeniyi Adegeye, Africa Design Expo is not going to be a one-off project. “We plan to take the show round the continent; it’s not going to be Nigeria alone. We will do everything possible to get this show to other parts of Africa. What this whole thing is about is that, we need an African design centre. We intend to institutionalise the project and create a world-class standard that will have immense potential of being an annual vehicle that will tour Africa and continue to represent Nigeria positively in the eyes of the world.”
