Three women on change lane

BY OYINDAMOLA LAWAL

HAVING been mentored to impact on lives of people in their communities for a month by Fortune/US State Department Global Women Leaders Mentoring Partnership, three influential Nigerian women — Tara Fela-Durotoye of House of Tara; Detoun A. Ogwo, CEO of AGDC; and Lucy Kanu, Founder of Idea Builders — have returned to give back to the society, what they learnt through various projects targeted at women, young entrepreneurs and the youths among others.
Fortune/US State Department Global Women Leaders Mentoring Partnership, inaugurated in 2006, has mentored over 116 women from 39 countries.
In the course of the training, Detoun Ogwo, 2010 candidate, was placed at Goldman Sachs/World Bank, while Tara Fela-Durotoye and Lucy Kanu were at Exxon Mobil in 2010 and 2008 respectively.
The Director of ADGC Employability and Enterprise Development, Detoun Ogwo disclosed that her programme is aimed at creating gainful employment for Nigerian youths.
In similar mold, Tara’s “ Be inspired Campus Tour” is working to improve the lot of women.
Coming home in 2008, Fortune alumnus, Lucy Kanu launched the Women Mentoring Partnership to mobilize enterprising young women.
Working together as part of their collaborative “Pay forward” project, Tara Fela-Durotoye will be rolling out the mentoring walk in Delta State while Detoun Ogwo anchors the Ogun State leg and Lucy Kanu, Lagos.
The Walk will start from November 20 in 12 different countries across the globe and at different times as may be suitable to them.

THE Global Women’s Mentoring Walks”, builds upon the success of mentoring walks events organized in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Argentine, Peru, Egypt, Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Bolivia, El Salvador and Serbia in 2008 and 2009 respectively. The mentoring walks are the collaborative “pay forward” outcome of the mentoring partnership in collaboration with Vital Voices Global Partnership and Idea Builders Initiative.

IN Nigeria the mentoring walk will include over 5, 000 participants across Lagos, Delta, Abuja, Ogun and Akwa Ibom State.
Sharing their experiences, Fela-Durotoye said, “I truly had an amazing time in the US. When I got nominated for the programme, I had my reservations, but when I got there my mind was completely changed. One thing I learnt was seeing influential and successful women from different countries taking their time to mentor me and other women. Many of them were mature women, probably in their 50s.”
“I was in Exxon Mobil, so I was exposed to the vice-president and president of the organization,” she added. “It was amazing going into their offices and to see that they had gone to my website, read so much about me, and were truly interested in my progress and my story.”
“And I said to myself: if these great people can pick interest in me, then I needed to do something to inspire more people and women in Nigerian to impact on lives,” she said.
“I was exposed to an American corporation, a company that has 85,000 employees; they have invested in 120 countries — actually the most profitable countries in the world; and seeing how companies like that are run. The culture of the organisations was controlled, measured. Some of those learning skills, I brought back into my organization; even while I was still in America, I tried to implement some of those things within my organisation and I saw the difference.
“For me, it was the best thing that could happen to me in the year 2010. With that same fire and energy, I have come back home to do something to say I am grateful for that opportunity, and I would like to do something to change Nigeria as a Republic.”
And for to Ogwo, “The fortune programme for me was life transforming. I remember the day I got a call from the US State Department saying that I was one of the two women nominated! It was a very intensive selection. When they sent the letter, there were two individuals, who had been assigned to me as my mentors. They were able to make time in four weeks to show me how things are done; how women leaders live. I went into the Google search and into the World Bank; and I was mentored by incidentally the lady, who started the 10, 000 women programme and also the Fortune Mentoring Programme by name Dina Powell and our very own Dr Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
A month before I left for this programme, we had 7, 500 applications for 70 provisions; so I already knew that the opportunity was presented to help me scale up what we are doing: we are trying to create a gap between the universities and what the employers are looking for. Before I got to America, it was amazing that these women had known who I was, they had studied my organisation and were willing to support me; one of them said to me: ‘you must succeed and we are committed to your success!’
We are trying to create change; we are back energized and empowered to make a difference. We have created a network.

Lucy Kanu,  “it was a fantastic experience; the competition to get into the programme is tight. It makes you feel that ‘I am not here by chance and there is an opportunity.” Not everyone can go for that programme, so we have a responsibility as people who have been given an opportunity to come back home and duplicate the best practices that we have learnt.
Kalu advises Nigerian women to do the right thing, give themselves the benefit of doubt that they can do it, help young entrepreneur.
“If you are a top women, please leave the ladder standing, we need to climb that corporate ladder; if one falls, please hold her hand and take her up instead of mocking her. Let us do things that will support young women to achieve.”

Eagle's Goale, Enyeama Joins World Top Eleven GoalKeepers

I cannot really explain vividly why I have suddenly developed an interest in writing about sport… now I think I know, it was because of the awful and most embarrassing action, Sani Kaita put on display yesterday.   Gosh!!!!!! I am developing an interest in sport, but the truth still remains that I am not a soccer fan, but I enjoy the goal part though…. That part where we all shout Goooooooooooooooooal.
I used to like hockey but that was because I played it in High School.
To cut the long story short, I am taking about the Top Eleven Goalkeepers, those who would come to prominence at the this year World Cup
Prior to World Cup, Stewart Coggin of about.com analysed the top 10 goalkeepers who are likely to be prominent at this year's World Cup. Vincent Enyeama has pushed his way into that list, somehow.

I have included him as the eleventh Goalkeeper. I think he is worthy of that position, he did brilliantly well in the games Nigeria played against Argentina and Greece. Enyeama has been one of the standout performers of the competition so far.
It was stated that Avram Grant is using his Israeli connections to clinch a deal as soon as the World Cup ends. Woah! I am happy for Nigeria’s Keeper Fantastic!!!

PROFILES OF STEWARD'S TOP TEN AND DAMMY'S TOP ELEVEN

1. Gianluigi Buffon (Italy)

"Goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is considered one of the world's best"
Together with Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas, Buffon is thought of my many observers as the best goalkeeper of the last decade. The Juventus custodian has few weaknesses and remains the most expensive goalkeeper in the world following his 2001 move from Parma to Juve.

2. Iker Casillas (Spain)

"Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas"
'Saint Iker,' as he is known at Real Madrid, has been his club's first-choice goalkeeper since he was a teenager, having come through the youth set-up. He has made a few high profile errors for Real Madrid this season, but those should be forgiven considering his years of consistently outstanding performances. Currently the second most capped Spanish goalkeeper after Andoni Zubizarreta and his status as undisputed number one has contributed to Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes' failure to earn a single cap.

3. Julio Cesar (Brazil)
"Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar"
Emerged as Dunga’s first-choice goalkeeper for the World Cup qualifiers and the Inter Milan stalwart has not let his coach down. He performed superbly right through the 18-match qualifying process, particularly impressive in the 1-1 draw at altitude in Ecuador and the 4-0 win over Uruguay in Montevideo. Has come back strongly from several high-profile mistakes that blighted him earlier in his career.

4. Hugo Lloris (France)
"France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris"
Number one for French giants Lyon, Lloris looks to have a promising career ahead of him for club and country. Boasting a long reach and superb reflexes, Lloris is capable of keeping strikers at bay when his team are firmly under the cosh. Previously at Nice, he was signed by Lyon to replace former France international Gregory Coupet. Must improve his decision-making.

5. David James (England)
"England goalkeeper David James"
Persistent injuries mean that James is not certain to be first-choice for England this summer. But when on form, the veteran Portsmouth goalkeeper remains one of the best in the business. However, throughout his career he has been guilty of high profile errors, earning himself the nickname 'Calamity James.' With Joe Hart lacking experience, Robert Green having endured an indifferent season, and a lack of alternatives, James looks the best bet to walk out for the first game.

6. Mark Schwarzer (Australia)
                                                           "Australia goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer"
This shot-stopper appears to get better with age. Playing behind solid but far from watertight defenses for Australia and Fulham, he is often called into action and rarely lets his side down, with his reflexes remaining sharp despite his advancing years. A calming influence, Schwarzer rose to prominence after joining Middlesbrough from Bradford City in 1997.

7. Tim Howard (USA)

"USA goalkeeper Tim Howard"
Error prone after joining Manchester United a little too early in his career, the USA international has developed into one of the most solid goalkeepers in the Premier League since joining Everton, initially on loan, in 2006. A measure of his progress was a clean sheet against a Spanish side in the 2009 Confederations Cup who had not failed to score in a match since 2007.

8. Thomas Sorensen (Denmark)

"Denmark goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen"
The Dane has been on the international scene for over 10 years and has enjoyed something of a renaissance at Stoke City. After falling out of favor at Aston Villa, he joined the Potters in 2008 and has helped keep them in the Premier League for successive seasons. This will be Sorensen's second World Cup.

9. Samir Handanovic (Slovenia)

"Udinese goalkeeper Samir Handanovic is one of Slovenia's best players"
The 6ft 5in stopper is under contract with Udinese until 2012 but a strong World Cup showing could see him earn a move to a bigger club. Conceding just four goals in 10 qualifying matches, Handanovic helps form the spine of the team, with his agility and penalty-saving prowess both valuable assets.

10. Sergio Romero (Argentina)

"Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero"
Diego Maradona has put his faith in the young goalkeeper and he looks set to start between the posts in South Africa. The AZ Alkmaar stopper is quoted as saying that he wishes to move away from the Netherlands into one of Europe’s major leagues and a strong showing this summer will boost his chances of achieving that goal. Performed impressively at times in the Champions League this season but could not prevent his side being eliminated in the group stages.

MY 11TH LIST

11. Vincent Enyeama (Nigeria)
Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama
One of the best shot-stoppers in Africa, Vincent Enyeama has been the undisputed first choice between the posts for Nigeria

Tanya Walton Pratt Becomes Indiana’s First Black Federal Judge

Senator Evan Bayh has recommended that President Barack Obama name Marion County Superior Court Judge Tanya Walton Pratt to be a federal judge for the Southern District of Indiana. The move would make Pratt the first African-American federal judge in Indiana history. The Spelman College and Howard University School of Law graduate is the fourth woman to be named a federal judge in the state. Pratt, who has worked as a private practice lawyer, also has served as deputy public defender in the probate division of the Marion Superior Court. Bollywood Welcome Collumbia Songstree, Shakira - Sing For Salim-Sulaiman

After Akon for Shah Rukh Khan's Ra.1, the Latin American sensation Shakira's will rock in a Bollywood song. In time past, Shakira had performed live in Mumbai and other cities back in 2007 and has repeatedly expressed her desire to be a part of the Bollywood film industry.
The number, a frenzied dance track to be filmed on the South African model Candice Boucher for the film featuring the IPL owner and entrepreneur Sachin Joshi, will be recorded in the next couple of months.

Says a source, "Sachin Joshi, who's helming and starring in the project, is in touch with Shakira and she has agreed to sing for Salim-Sulaiman. The lyrics would be in English with a smattering of simple Hindi. It won't be a duet like the Kylie Minogue song in Tony D'Souza's Blue. It'd be a Shakira solo dhamaka instead."
Composer Salim of Salim-Sulaiman confirms it. "It would be a very sensuous, cabaret kind of a song."

The Duo- Prince William and Kate are not expecting a baby

BRITAIN’S Prince William and his girlfriend Kate Middleton aren’t expecting a baby — despite recent reports to the contrary.
Star magazine claims in its latest issue that Middleton is pregnant with the couple’s first child and the royal family is in a “frantic scramble to keep [the] scandal secret.”
But a Clarence House spokesperson has spoken out to set the record straight.
“This is a load of rubbish,” said the rep. “Not at all true.”
On Monday, William, 27, departed the UK for South Africa to take in a few World Cup games and attend meetings in Botswana for the elephant-protection focused Tusk Conservation Charity with his brother, Prince Harry.
Middleton, 28, is not expected to join him in Africa.

Miss Nigeria Pageant Returns

Binta Sukai (Miss Nigeria 1990), Nike Oshinowo (Pageant organiser), Vien Tetsola (Miss Nigeria 1999/2000), Ene Lawani (Miss Nigeria 2004)
Nigeria ’s flagship beauty pageant, Miss Nigeria, berthed in 1957 is set to make a return to the country’s social calendar.
And for the first time in the history of the pageant, it will be activated in three continents, namely Africa, Europe and North America.
The new Miss Nigeria will infuse old world glamour with modern elegance.

Disclosing this at a media parley in Lagos last week, the Chief Executive and Creative Director of the pageant, Mrs. Nike Oshinowo-Soleye said that the new Miss Nigeria Pageant will once again showcase positive attributes of the Nigerian woman, Elegance, Poise, Talent, Intelligence and as well as Beauty.
She noted that the winner of the pageant would continue to be a role model to the Nigerian society at large and a spokesperson for national volunteerism and charity, while using her title to educate millions of Nigerians on issues of importance to the society.
Oshinowo-Soleye added that in years past, pageantry was a family affair, and promised to bring back the family friendly pageant, reminiscent of a time when opportunity came with responsibility, and womanhood was held in the highest regard.
The premiere of the pageant in 1957 saw Grace Oyelude as the crowned Queen. Her successor, Helen Anyamaeluna came in 1958 and in 1960, Rosemary Anieze was crowned Miss Independence. Over the years, other Queens emerged with the current being Enemiah Lawani.
Oshinowo-Soleye added that unlike other pageants, the New Miss Nigeria pageant will have no swim wear segment, as the contestants would be judged on intelligence, poise, cultural values as well as beauty.
The new ‘Miss Nigeria’ is committed to empowering young women. This year’s winner will win a full scholarship to be educated in any institution of higher learning of her choice anywhere in the world; a luxury car, one year’s salary and accommodation in Lagos, a year’s wardrobe from leading Nigeria.
