URBAN BEAT BY VLISCO

Following Vlisco’s successful Fashion Academy for local tailors across the country, Vlisco Nigeria is once again counting down to February 22nd for another milestone fashion event.

This time one budding fashion designer will be chosen from a large pool of participants from the Vlisco Fashion Academy. The winner will showcase their designs in a fashion show on the same day alongside top Nigerian designers.

A call for submission to enter for the competition begins in January 2009. The competition is a test for creativity, finish, craftsmanship, presentation and a distinct style. This can be a launch pad for the lucky winner’s fashion career. Applicants are required to send in sample sketches of their work in Avante Premiere (young and fresh), Couturiere (exclusive) and Cocktail styles before or by the 31st of January to the email addresses listed below.

The Vlisco Urban Beat Fashion Event is the offspring of the Vlisco Fashion Academy which was created in line with the Company’s corporate ethos of being a committed, ethical and loyal partner for business communities where Vlisco textiles have become part of the vibrant visual and fashion culture. How long has the Vlisco Company been present in Nigeria?
Vlisco Tinapa, our FZE Company was founded May 2008, for the exploitation of our Image Store in the Tinapa Free Trade and leisure Zone. We paid our two-year lease, to BROLL, the international management company that manages the shopping zone. We received our Trading license from NEPZA. Nevertheless we were closed by customs, with, till date, nothing in writing, from anybody. Just customs coming into the shop and closing it, six days after we opened the shop on December 2007. The shop is a _300,000 investment and offers jobs to about eight people.
We also opened a representative company, based, centrally in Abuja, at the end of last year. This company performs consumer and market research in the Nigerian market to find out how we can even create better products specifically to serve our Nigerian Consumers.

Birth of the Vlisco Fashion Academy
Whilst getting my Vlisco fabrics made with renowned tailors and designers in Abuja and then in Lagos, I saw that most of the tailors spoke French. They were from the Republic of Benin, Senegal etc. I wondered why and asked many around me. The answer was that they were better.
I did not believe that, so I started talking to people like Adebayo Jones, a designer based in London, Folake Majin, well known in the North, as she dresses most of the Northern ladies, and some others and after also doing research with Northern tailors, we came to the conclusion that we could maybe as a fashion brand, help in this respect and make a difference in helping the Nigerian fashion industry move forward from the roots. The result is that we are now doing the kick off of the Vlisco Fashion Academy in Lagos, Abuja and Kano, for a series of tailor workshops, all around the country.
We plan to train tailors and help them improve all kind of skills, from setting up one's own business to pattern cutting, costing etc. But we also give them information about fashion, trends, colors etc. It is a very exciting project and it has been received with an overwhelming enthusiasm by the whole fashion industry; also by the established designers and tailoring houses we have spoken to. We will have a follow up session in April 2009 after the initial training session. At the same time we will unveil our upcoming Vlisco Young Designers' contest.

On the use of wax and Ankara fabric in today's fashion
The revival of Ankara, has also given a new impulse to Vlisco, especially as it coincides with the new strategy of Collections. We are moving towards a fashion brand and are now launching our designs in four collections a year.

Admission to the workshop
Lagos alone has over 10,000 tailors. This is too much to start with, so we have started with 500, and from there we will keep working till we have worked with every interested tailor, which means all of them. I believe they should all at least get a chance to join if they are interested.
Every tailor can improve his product and clientele by using Vlisco. Further, we would like to give all that are interested a chance to train with us. Through market research we have found out that our Vlisco cloth is not known by all, so we would also like to show the advantages of working with Vlisco, especially in an era of revival of Ankara. But there is not only the training, there are also the ideas we can give as well as the pattern books we are developing and general information on the fashion industry. We used to have pattern books in other African countries, but we would like to start them again, as they are well appreciated. We ourselves are very respectful with our product; we would also like to see that although the customer pays more for it, they also get more from it.
The Fashion Academy kicks off in this Month, in three regions, intensive training sessions will continue from March to April 09. It will be re-occurring at least twice a year.
Our Vlisco Fashion Academy is designed for tailors of all outfits who are interested to join. We will have beginners, medium and advances-level courses.

On the Vlisco brand
THE Vlisco brand is one of the strongest personalities I know. Through its 160 years history, the brand has a lot of knowledge and values and deserves a lot of respect. The brand stands out through its continuous attention to quality and inspiration of the drawings and colors.
Because of its longtime relationship with the consumer in West and Central Africa, the brand has received insight in the many different cultures, lives through all important moments and gives the consumer trust and confidence - the old friend, always around, on whom one can always fall back.
There are only a few brands that are so entangled in the daily life, as well as in a naming ceremonies or again, Gala as well as the woman's meetings. Thanks to these associations, the brand stands out in respect to other brands. All new collections place the modern woman on a pedestal like an Ode to the lady of today.

Marking Vlisco Out Among Others
The big difference with other textile brands is the large capacity of originality, of new designs, and the constant attention to quality. When one compares Vlisco to the total textile industry, it appears Unique. The know-how of wax, the sort of colors (all developed in-house) and the designs make it unique.
In Europe Vlisco is used in every exposition or essay as "The example".
Everywhere around the World where we see consumers, originally from West and Central Africa, they wear Vlisco to show the African Identity. History makes that the foundation and history are very deep, which not many other brands can boast. Vlisco is being copied continuously.

Vlisco textiles in local market
The company dates from 1846, but the products are found on the markets of West and Central Africa since the 1930s.
Vlisco is a Dutch company yet it appears to have a strong West African presence. With its brilliant hues and busy patterns, it seems specifically targeted at Africans.
Vlisco has always made wax, specifically for the consumers for Western and Central Africa, on the continent, but also very important throughout the whole Diaspora, from Europe to the US and the Middle and Far East.
According to our consumers, it also fits the darker skin very specifically.
Everywhere there are consumers, originating from West and Central Africa. Besides in most West and Central African countries, in South Africa, the US, and most countries of Western Europe at Diaspora concentrations like the UK, France and The Netherlands and a little in the Middle East.

Success of the brand
Different parts of Nigeria have different relationships. The South East, mainly the Igbo and its related ethnic groups have a long tradition with Vlisco and its' classic (Igbo) designs, everybody knows, like Fish scale, Opener etc, in the typical yellow / orange and dark red colors. It is mostly worn by ladies, but also by men.
In the north of Nigeria, a specific Vlisco product which has three colors and open designs with also a lot of white, called Super Wax is especially appreciated. It is worn as an everyday wear daywear as well as for special occasions. Mostly worn by women, there are also some men that like wearing it.
In the South West, mostly men wear it especially on Fridays. But we are revolutionizing the market at the moment in that segment with our new collections that appear four times a year. The very fashion conscious Nigerian is adapting quickly to the new trends and designs, especially with the revival of the African print, what we call Ankara here. Then even those who normally did not wear wax are starting to wear it. We have had six of the new collections now and they are very inspiring to all.

Challenges facing the brand in Nigeria
Our product is banned and the business environment is very challenging.
Besides the Netherlands, we have factories in Ghana as well as in Ivory Coast. If the climate would be more inviting, contrary to our experience in Tinapa, we could have considered setting up a factory for some of our products in Nigeria.
We wanted to launch fashionable Vlisco suitcases. This is another product banned for importation to Nigeria. So I went to look for the factories. There is only one factory, which assembles parts brought in from Dubai, and they were not interested to produce for us. This is just one example. The Tinapa fiasco is another. Nonetheless we are here to serve and we will continue to do so in the face of challenges. The truth is that no business exists without its own unique difficulties.

Fashion-conscious Nigerians and Vlisco brand
Vlisco is closely looking at the Nigerian market. We are seeking collaboration with top Nigerian designers, and fashion houses. At the Vlisco Fashion Academy, we are starting off with Nigerian top designer, Adebayo Jones.
Our objective is to create these workshop sessions where local tailors have access to international designers and their knowledge and expertise thereby creating a flourishing fashion industry even from grassroots level. The inaugural edition of the Vlisco Fashion Academy has recorded a number of talented tailors who have signed up to participate. These are tailors who have, maybe, one sewing machine in a little wooden space that is home and shop. These tailors have the opportunity to learn from the masters and become masters in the fashion industry themselves. We are collaborating with top Nigerian designers as well as lecturers from the London College of Fashion as well as local Nigerian fashion schools and houses. The fashion industry, just like the film industry in Nigeria is huge, so I think it would be great if we also have more Nigerian tailors in all the renowned tailoring houses.

Vendrika… Longing for Obama

By Oyindamola Lawal
In the competitive world of fashion, it takes a lot of gumption to get to the top. Creating your own fashion label is, of course, the ultimate dream of any couturier. Having established his label, Vendrika, Emmanuel Usanga creative output has been in the limelight.
January 20 was indeed a memorable day for the Obamas, and for Nigerians, it was a night of glitz and glamour as Vendrika celebrated Obama’s inauguration ceremony alongside Michele –– Obama’s wife ¬¬–– classy fashion style.
The event, which took place on January 20, at D’Nu Grotto, Etim Inyang Crescent, Victoria Island, was organised by Nigerian Peoples Coalition in collaboration with Vendrika fashion. The stylish designer replicated the elegant dress Michelle Obama wore on the Election Day.
On the runway, models stepped out in red and black long dresses, though longer than Michelle’s dress yet, sophisticated and graceful.
In the same vein, models strut the stage in eye-catching party wears, casuals, formal and corporate outfits; coming in different styles, colours, shapes, designs and fabrics. Vendrika did not only play with fabrics and colours, but used the US colours alongside his.
The models pranced the runway in short sexy beaded dresses, agbada, and cowboy outfits among others.
Grotto’s staff on their own celebrated Obama in style adorning Obama pictures on African fabric sewn into different styles and designs.
According to Usanga, “ LONGING FOR OBAMA (satin and chiffon) is a re-make of the victory gown that
Michelle Obama wore on Barack Obama's Election Day November 4, 2008. The original version was a shorter gown while this longer version strongly evokes the
femineity Michelle portrays as the next First Lady of the U S. The reds are at the right feminine places while the black
reveals the integrated personality of the design.”
“RED N' BLUE INTEGRATED (smooth linen) preserves the Democratic Blue of Obama's party while the Republican Red bands reflect Obama's philosophy –– Unity –– irrespective of political differences”, he added.
RED N' BLUE PARTY (cotton print tops in dominant Red and Black) on top of beaded Blue Jeans reflect work mood for a ready-to-go casual dresser. Vibrant colours at the top reflect a happy mood ready to party with anyone.”
BIRDS FOR OBAMA reflects the Obama Girl fever that a number of young ladies would have out of admiration for Obama's charms. The red bird patterned patch on the dresses reflect a very likely move the Republicans may make to upset President Obama, the same way Bill Clinton got into trouble with Monica Lewinsky.
PARTY RED N' BLUE are truly party wears especially for the warmer and sunnier days of Hope translated into action. The mixture of Red and Blue results in the Pink stripes –– a reflection of admitting the Red Republicans only to a limited scale by the dominantly Blue Democrats. Red hot in beads reflects a very bold attempt by the Republicans to gain attention and re-take power from the Democrats
More so, red spicers outfit reflects the general tendency of African Americans to approach the Republicans from the fringe. President Obama is likely to perform so well, that the next most powerful figure to challenge Obama in the next general election would obviously come from the black community as a Republican candidate.
However, Klint D Drunk, Gandoki, Eedris Albulkarim among others thrilled the audience

IJE NWANDU - CEO LAPOOZA LINGERIE

Nwandu… War against breast cancer
AFTER a year in lingerie business, 23–year old Ije Nwandu extended the realm of her dream to help Nigerian women through her campaign on breast cancer. In order to fulfill her desire, she organised a show, which was sponsored by Fidelity Bank, to create awareness on the dreaded diseases. She spoke to OYINDAMOLA LAWAL on her aspirations, project and challenges.
Breast cancer campaign
We have just started, we have big dreams, and it’s something that we definitely hope would pick up. The reception of the show tells us that people are definitely interested in it. We invited a couple of breast cancer patents, but they wouldn’t come because they feel bad having it. Right now, a lot of organisations and governments are interested in the campaign.
Motivation to create awareness on breast cancer
First of all, we design lingerie; and as you know, lingerie is designed not only to beautify the breast, but also to protect it. We also have some personal experiences, where some of our family members had had it, so, it comes natural that one has to enlighten people about it.
Inspiration
A lot of people want to do something about it, but don’t know, where to start from. So, we intend to spend a lot of time to talk about it just as we talk about our lingerie, and to make ourselves look hotter. The inspiration comes from the women around me, the women I have grown up with, the women in my family and my little girls.

WHEN did you venture into lingerie industry?
I have been doing it for a year and half. The idea came up early 2007, but we didn’t start until 2007 Christmas.
And the coinage Lapooza
It was coined from the names of my little cousins Leila, she’s three and the last child. Then Pooky, my little niece and Zara, my little sister. The combination of their names resulted in Lapooza.
Challenges
Starting up this business is not something people like your parent will encourage and the fact that it was lingerie, they saw the potentials, but it was very difficult getting people to believe in what I was doing. It’s been a rough year, but it’s worth the while.
Growing up
I will not exchange my life for the world. I had the best education that my parents could afford. They gave me all the love that they could. They give me all the support, I could ever wish for. I had a beautiful childhood.
Family background
I am the first child of my parents. I come from Anambra State, grew up in Enugu and schooled in England. I am from the best family on earth. If I die and come back, I will have the same family; I wouldn’t change it for the world. My mum is the seventh or the eighth wonder of the world. My dad is into construction and my mum is into a whole lot of stuffs, she helps run my company. She has a traveling agency, a dry cleaning outfit and also a lecturer. She is equally in charge of my dad’s charity. I have young sisters and a brother.
Education background
I have been in England since 2002, where I went to do my A level; after that, I went to University of Sheffield where I studied Politics and International Relations. I’m now doing two second degrees in City University and Regents Business School in London. I am getting my MBA in global Business Management. So, I’m very busy.
Where can one get the Lapooza lingerie?
You can get Lapooza lingerie in Nigeria. Usually, we sell through agents. What I know is that we are not opening our first store firm until about two years from now, so, not only are we selling our products, we are also encouraging women to start up their businesses. Right now, we currently have about 50 distributors in Nigeria but Lagos is still a new market to us. So, what we do is that women buy in bulk and we do all the advertising for them, we get to do like lingerie party, so not only are you selling lingerie, but having fun and happy telling other people about it. Right now, you find our agents in Enugu, Asaba, Onitsha, Abuja, Jos and the host of others. We mostly have young girls about 28 and 29, who don’t have job or who are housewives but want to still earn extra income; we tend to encourage them.
Price
I think that is the beauty about our products. It is really cheap compared to our competitors. You can get Lapooza products from N500. Our pant and thongs go for N500, our bra set cost about N3500, N4000 depends on what you want. One thing we have done is that we have different things in order to accommodate every pocket. If you came into a Lapooza stand with N500 you could walk away with something, if you came in with N20, 000 for one item, you could walk away with something.
Projection into the future
We are still a small company but we have big dreams and I don’t think we are going to stop until we conquer Africa. We are taking one step at a time, and until everyone says Lapooza, the same way everyone dreams about Victoria secret, we won’t stop.
Managing school and business
It’s a thing of this is what I want, so I have to make sacrifices; although my parents have always supported me, given me their 100 per cent backing. They also want to make sure that just incase this one doesn’t go right; I have something to fall back on. It means if I don’t have a social life, I can achieve this. So, what I focus on is school, school, school, Lapooza, and Lapooza.
Change in Nigeria
I would educate women. As I said, this breast cancer thing is something I’m very passionate about. I’ve seen so many friends lose their mothers, sisters, their grand mothers to breast cancer and one thing I would really want to do more is to change the mindset of women about breast cancer. This campaign is not something to be ashamed of; it’s something to embrace. It’s something to talk about so as to help other people. It’s something I would appeal to anyone who has the influence to get involved in.
Role models
My role model is my mother. She’s been a firebrand. Like I said, if I die and had to come back, I would want to be her daughter because she has taught me everything I need to know. I have her personality though she doesn’t agree with that I’m pretty much her in a different form. I admire her so much.
Social time
To me, my social time is Lapooza; that is what I do to have fun. I don’t look at it as a job; it’s just pretty much what I do. So, if I am not studying, I am probably talking t you about – have you seen my latest design? Did you see what I have done? What do you think? That’s pretty much what I do.
Definition of fashion
It’s anything that makes you comfortable; I don’t think you have to follow a certain trend. I just believe that you have to know what work for you. However, I don’t believe that because everybody is wearing pencil skirt, you have to wear it, if you have the right body for it, why wear it because it’s in vogue. You have to be yourself; if you are comfortable and you don’t appear confident in yourself then it shows.
Style of fashion
It’s simplicity; it’s all about comfort that is the important thing to me. I do like a lot of sparkling things. I am attracted to sparkling things but that is pretty much the only thing I will say would be my obsession with fashion. Everything else, as long as I am comfortable and I feel happy with what I am wearing then I am good to go.
Stylish icon
I will say the women in my family again. I have grown up watching them and I have always wanted to be like them and justify them.
What she wont be caught dead wearing
I don’t know actually; I wouldn’t try everything. However, I think I wont be caught dead wearing something because it was in vogue. For instance, when skinny jeans were out, I never wore them initially, but when I got the right combination – how to make it look right from head to toe. I couldn’t have been caught dead wearing skinny jeans just like that, because I felt like everyone is wearing it the wrong way until someone told me that skinny jeans is hot with high heels and look nice with this kind of shirt and stuff like that, then I started wearing it. I copy other people, I can’t deny that, but I wouldn’t have worn it initially when it first came out. There are bunch of others.
Role models
My role model would be my mother; she’s been a fire band. Like I said, I if die and had to come back, I would want to be her daughter because she has taught me everything I know. I have her personality even though she doesn’t agree with that but I’m pretty much her in a different form. I admire her so much
Favourite designer
I don’t have one; I just go with the clothes. I’m not a designer freak; I go with whatever looks good on me.
Growing up
I had the most amazing childhood. I will keep saying I would not exchange my life for the world. I go to holidays, pickings; I got the best education that they could afford. They gave me all the love that they could. They give me all the support, I could ever wish for. I have a beautiful childhood, I cant think of anything I would change about my childhood.
Most embarrassing moment
When I was sixteen that was when I just got to England and someone told me it’s a bank holiday but I couldn’t understand what that meant and I needed to go to the bank, so I went into town and the bank didn’t open and I still couldn’t get it. I kept saying the bank had close, people around said it’s a bank holiday and I still couldn’t understand. That was very embarrassing. They are bunch of others but they are much more embarrassing.
Memorable
I would say Christmas at home. I come from a very big family, my father has 22 siblings and I have 85 cousins; imagine when we were younger, when we have half of us or more during Christmas bash, it was so much fun and we always look forward to. Unfortunately most people are married now, so we don’t have that privilege anymore.
Beauty routine
I don’t have one. Everyone says your mother blessed you with her skin or else you will do so much trouble. I don’t do anything extra ordinary. I just do my makeup and that’s pretty much it. I don’t use any special cream; I use baby oil. My mother has the most amazing skin and that’s all she uses, so I decided hat her skin is like mine and that is what I will use, which is a baby oil with Aloe Vera.
Sexiest part
I think it depends for women. For me, I will say it’s my leg, I love my legs; not everyone agree with me but I love my legs and I tend to show them what they lost.

Olowu gets Obama’s nods?

MICHELLE Obama, no doubts, is one of the top best-dressed women in the world today. Last year, she was voted among the top 10 dressed ladies because of her style and panache. She was a beauty to behold during the electioneering campaigns, making style statements with her fabrics and choice of colours.
In recent times, she has been helping out American designers by wearing their designs and giving them exposure. Her endorsements of these designers in the coming term are sure to be more powerful than ad spots.
Speaking on Mrs. Obama’s fashion, Sally Singer, Vogue’s Fashion News Director, said. “There is an immediate buzz in the fashion world. She motivates people to think about wearing something that looks beautiful, regardless of the price point.”
Michelle’s dress sense, is perhaps, the reason the fashion world is waiting to know what she is going to wear to the White House Inaugural Ball on Tuesday, January 20.
There’s been considerable debate over whether Mrs. Obama will showcase her trademark jewel colours for her inauguration dress or go for a classic white gown as favoured by Nancy Reagan and most famously, Jackie Kennedy.
After several sketches from designers such as Diane Von Furstenberg, Badgley Mishka, chado Raph Rucci, Betsey Johnson, Monique Lhuillier, Gtom, Zac Posen, Karl Lagerfeld, Christian Lacroix, Peter Som, Tracy Reese; designers such as Donna Karan and Thakoon Panichgul, who was in charge of the much maligned floral print dresses she wore the night of her husband's Democratic Party National Convention (DNC) acceptance speech and the first debate, expressed interest in designing a gown for her and a host of others on the Internet, Michelle is still to make a statement on who will design her dress.
Women's Wear Daily reports that some designers including Isaac Mizrahi, Carolina Herrera and Betsey Johnson, who have gone ahead to submit sketches of the dresses they'd like to design for Michelle for the Inauguration Ball.
Olowu, it is said, has clarity of vision that can build a brand — and an imaginative empathy that helps him design clothes women like to wear.
Some have even suggested that Mrs. Obama will decide to go with Maria Pinto, the Chicago designer behind the famous Purple Dress. There are, however, indications that Britain’s 2006 New Designer of the Year, Duro Oluwo, a Nigerian, will get the nod.
In his few years on the job, he has wooed the fashion world with his colour and breezy prints, and his flowered dresses falling to the mid-calf and ending in ruffled hemlines.
Trained as a lawyer, the Nigeria-born designer, whose mother is a Jamaican, launched his label in 2005, months before taking to the stage to collect his award from Laura Bailey.
And already he has the reputation for being the type of man who makes you want to wear his designs before you've even seen them.
"I think fashion should be joyful – it shouldn't dictate to women but it should invite them into the fantasy of the designer who is making them," he says.
First discovered by Vogue's Sally Singer and Julie Gilhart, of Barneys, Olowu is known for stunning fluid dresses, made from vintage fabrics that he finds all over the world as well as new prints that he's been designing himself, and incredibly desirable one-off, vintage-inspired accessories.
"I like to make clothes for women to feel good about themselves," he goes on. "And that they don't feel they'll see everywhere."
Olowu, who formerly designed clothes for the boutique on Ledbury Road that he owned with his ex-wife, is staying true to his design philosophy. "Good tailoring is very important to me," he says. "It is the basis of even the most fluid dress."
In the United State of America, the dresses worn by America First lady at the Inauguration is usually kept in Smithsonian Museum.
As the inauguration ceremony s going on in the US, Vendrika Fashion will showcase the replication of the dress that Michelle Obama wore on the election day alongside other eye-catching party and evening wear by 7pm on Tuesday, at D’Nu Grotto, Etim Inyang Crescent, Victoria Island, Lagos.

THE INAUGURAL PUPLE BALL PRESENTED BY MOET & CHANDON CHAMPAGNE

In honor of President-Elect Barack Obama’s Historic Inauguration, we will be hosting an exclusive formal ball in the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. the evening of The Inauguration Ceremony. It will be a night of celebration and elegance designed to bring together the most influential and diverse leaders of our nation. Celebrities and Politicians will be joining us from around the nation to attend “The Inaugural Purple Ball” in honor of bipartisanship and diversity.

Guests will be surrounded by carefully laid lush purple velvet, crystals and only the best champagne from Moet & Chandon will be served. As part of the evening, we will be serving a delicious champagne dinner. We will also be paying special tribute to our veterans and troops. Special musical performances by Il Divo & Peter Cincotti will be part of the evenings program.

The festivities for the inauguration of President Barack Obama provide a wonderfully unique opportunity for a flower re-delivery project. Given the nation’s collective need to honor America’s dedicated, wounded soldiers, and desire to embrace a new, more hopeful future, we will share the inauguration spirit by delivering celebration flowers to injured veterans at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, the National Naval Medical Center and the Washington DC VA Medical Center here in the Nation’s Capital.

Local volunteers partnered with The FlowerPower Foundation of New York City. Founded by Nancy Lawlor in 2003, the Foundation has collected more than $2.5 million of donated event flowers, re-assembled and given them to those who rarely receive such gifts of hope. Thousands of elderly, sick and terminally ill across the nation have been touched by this act of kindness.

United State of Nigeria: TV Series

United States of Nigeria is the new TV series by filmmaker Ayo Shonaiya, traveling around America meeting and interacting with Nigerians with interesting lives and stories to tell, from the tame 2nd generation Nigerian/American Ibo girl wishing for an Ibo husband to female rapper who's next move is to come conquer the Nigerian music scene (even though she's never been to Nigeria before).

The fly-on-the-wall/documentary style half hour program also features super-rich American celebrities who are born to Nigerian parents and of course the real-life strugglers in God's own country who are stuck in the immigration crack in the wall and can't return home just yet.

United States of Nigeria is an entertaining look at life for different Nigerians in America, brought to you by the No.1 producers of Nigerian TV content in the UK, R70 World.

For sponsorship and advert placement on the program on Nigerian television and on BEN TV in the UK, please email: sponsorship@r70.com for more details and rates, or in Nigeria call PJ on 01 950 5115 or 0808 230 2940.

Modeling is My Life - Kate Menson

Kate Techie Menson, winner of the 2008 Face of Africa modeling competition has declared her intention to become the next African
international supermodel. She agrees that apart from Oluchi, winner of the first edition of the competition, none of the other winners has been able to attain global recognition; and she hopes that she would be able to change all that.

“I am giving it my all and doing what I have to do. I know what I want to achieve and where I want to get to and that is on Oluchi’s level and even above or better. With dreams like that and the
determination and confidence it is possible to do it.”

The striking 23-year-old Ghanaian model has had quite a journey in the modeling and fashion world, working with some top Ghanaian fashion designers either for free, or for a next-to-nothing fee. Prior to winning the M-net Face of Africa contest, she had participated in ‘Top Model Ghana’ and even auditioned for the 2006 edition of the Face of Africa competition, where she was turned down because she didn’t fit the body measurement required for the contest. But with determination and hard work, she
forged on until finally winning the biggest prize in modeling on the African continent.

Kate sees her victory as a means to inspire and mentor others to become like her. “It means a lot because when you win such a competition, you become a mentor for other people; other aspiring models. It is a great feeling and it comes with some responsibilities.”

Jessica Alba Shopping at Saks Fifth

This girl is one shopping machine! Earlier today Jessica Alba was spotted out shopping at Saks Fifth Avenue with her mother Catherine in Los Angeles, California. I guess Jess doesn’t get to see much of her family these days since she’s been spending a lot of time with them. Either that or they’ve extended their stay past the holidays.

Looking cute in a yellow top and fringe boots actress Hilary Duff was spotted on her way to visit a friend’s home in Studio City, California on Tuesday. It’s been a while since I’ve posted some pictures of her! Where has she been hiding out???

HKTDC Hong Kong Fashion Week for Fall / Winter 2009

Star Performer in the Fashion Stakes
The largest fashion event in Asia celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2009 – proof that HKTDC Hong Kong Fashion Week for Fall/Winter is an effective trading platform that year after year brings exhibitors and buyers together to achieve business success.

Time Sensitive
Fashion is a dynamic industry: trends come and go, product life cycles get shorter, technological developments result in new fabrics and yarns. The Fall/Winter 2009 edition keeps its finger on the pulse, enabling buyers to source products that will be well received in the market.

Global Reach
Reflecting the global nature of the industry, participation in the fair is also very international. In 2008, 1,490 exhibitors from 20 countries and regions took part. A total of 23,700 buyers from 100 countries and regions came through the doors over the four days of the show.

Sourcing Hub
Hong Kong is a global fashion sourcing hub, which exports a wide variety of clothing and clothing accessories to markets around the world. In 2007, exports were valued at US$28.77 billion; while the US remains the biggest market with a share of around 37%, among markets performing significantly well are the Russian Federation and several countries in Southeast Asia, while the EU continues to show healthy growth.

In the Zone
Good organisation is another factor in Fashion Week's good record. Themed zones highlight key sectors, ensuring buyers can locate their market niche with ease. A new zone has been created at the Spring/Summer edition in 2008 covering Fabrics & Yarn, featuring a wide range of products including cotton, embroidery, linen and wool, plus yarns. It joins the zones introduced in 2007 and well received by buyers, namely Emporium de Mode, which puts the spotlight on top-notch high fashion; Spice Arena, which presents a dazzling array of hats, shoes, scarves and handbags, and Infant & Children's wear.
Also featured are the well-established zones of Garment & Accessories Mart, Body & Intimate Wear, Bridal & Evening Wear, Fashion Gallery and Sewing Supplies.

Brand Conscious
Running concurrently with Hong Kong Fashion Week is HKTDC World Boutique, Hong Kong 2009, Asia's pioneer show promoting designers' collections and brands from around the world.

At Your Service
Fashion Week also prides itself on providing a range of facilities and services to enhance the fair experience. VIP buyers can avail themselves of the Dragon Lounge, where they can relax with complimentary light refreshments, check emails, read newspapers and business magazines, as well as hold meetings in private rooms. All fair-goers have access to the Business Centre, well-equipped to deal with a range of services including on-the-spot name card printing, document scanning, photocopying, and the sale of stationery.

Buyers’ Comments
"We have brought in a delegation comprising managers from 10 mainland department stores of Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Tianjin, Dalian and Qingdao who are all interested to source new brands for their stores. Some of them have already spotted some companies offering young ladies' wear, handbags, fashion watches and accessories. We really appreciate that HKTDC organised a round-table meeting to introduce us to prospective brand-name suppliers and also offered us the Business Matching Service. With the mainland market now open to overseas products, the fair is not only a useful sourcing hub for us, but also a platform where we learn from our international counterparts as well as build up our contacts and network."
Fan Yanru, Vice Secretary General,
China Commerce Association For General Merchandise,
Chinese mainland

"I have been to the fair before and this time I'm coming with owners of 10 other Japanese companies who have never been here. They are all very impressed by the size of the fair and the variety of products on display. This event has become much better, with exhibitors showcasing individual and original designs. We like trade shows with both big and small companies because very often it is those small ones which offer unique creations – these are what we want to explore."
Hitoshi Tajima, CEO,
D N A Co Ltd, Japan

"We are always interested in new things, especially items that are fashionable and well-made. This is the only fair that we attend and about 20% of our total orders for the year will come from this fair."
Sylvania Espelt, Designer,
Espelt, Spain

"We have 150 shops in Australia so we are always looking for new suppliers and new styles, colours and designs. We have been coming to Hong Kong Fashion Week since its inception, looking not only for clothing, but also for shop fittings, lights and display units. You can't afford not to come to this fair because if there were something new, you would miss it. It's the most important fair for us."
Hans Mueller, Managing Director,
Lowes, Australia

Act Now!
Ensure you make the most of the sourcing and networking opportunities offered by Fashion Week by marking it on your agenda now! The show runs from 12-15 January 2009.

Is Madonna's Little Girl Meant for Stardom?

We've been anxiously awaiting the acting/singing/modeling debut of Madonna's firstborn, Lourdes Ciccone Leon, for a while. The 14-year-old, who looks like she just fell out of an American Apparel ad, always seemed destined to follow in her mother's creative footsteps.

Looks like we may have to wait awhile longer. Despite a report that she's enrolled in Manhattan's Professional Children's School (also attended by Sarah Jessica Parker, ScarJo and the Tiz), Madonna's rep tells E! News, "That is not true."

Teen Kate Hudson Crazy for Boys!

Forget pretty ponies or science homework, Kate Hudson reveals in the new Elle that something else was on her teenage mind.

"When I was a teenager, like, when I turned 16, I loved boys. That was just my thing," says the Bride Wars actress. "I still love boys." (This may or may not explain her romances with Owen Wilson, Lance Armstrong and Dax Shepard.)

As an adult, she seems to have learned much from her mom, Goldie Hawn, about the proper care and feeding of a relationship.

"People think that you can put your sexual life on hold, but you have to find time for it. Without that relationship, our family is broken. My mom really implanted that in me when I was pregnant."

Wait a minute, Kate: She told you about sex after you were pregnant?

momo

Momo’s Luxurious, Alluring Feel For 2009
BY Oyindamola Lawal
African fashion is about to step into the limelight. One of Nigerian International fashion designer, Fati Asibelua of Momo, recently launched a combination of rich ceremonial heritage, traditional patterns, and vibrant colours for 2009.
Her spring/ summer 2009 collection is inspired by some of the most influential and glamorous fashion icons of the twenties century; it embodies the timeless style of icon past and present, in particular Audrey Hepburn, and mixes it with traditional African patterns.
However, Hepburn’s entirely original look has become the benchmark for modern elegance and the Spring range from Momo embodies her modern sense of elegance fused with the romantic look and use of colour popularized in the early 1980s.
Momo’s 2009 collection highlight the feminine silhouette, the collection features short and long dresses ideal for summer occasion wear. Design in wispy sheer silks with light airy volume, weightless layering and soft drapery provide fluid ethereal shapes. At the heart of the collection is the Grecian goddess dress. The sensual one shoulder style is accentuated with knotted and twisted necklines providing a modern edge to the classic cut.
A colour palate of fresh pastel in soft summery hues evokes a sense of freshness and optimum symbolic of spring’s new beginnings. Pop of clean clear turquoise; fun and optimistic lemon; and refreshing soft limes are reminiscent of blossoming flowers.
Over the years, the leading African label Momo has been seen on some of the world’s most renowned models including Alek Wek, Liya Kebede and Oluchi and has built a reputation as one of Africa’s most influential, exclusive and sought after fashion brands.
The company was founded in 2000 with the inception of fabric boutique but has expanded into a brand specializing in fabrics, high-fashion clothing, fashion accessories and lifestyle products. For the past eight years, Asibelua continues nurturing a substantial following in the Nigerian fashion industry. Momo’s creative Director presents an intense ambition, an artistic spirit and a global fashion perspective.
Staying true to its heritage, Momo’s spring/summer collection delivers a delightful visual collage with a timeless mix of African print in stripes, polka dots and checks. Used for special ceremonial purposes, these traditional African patterns are found in handcrafted, indigenous textiles across the African continent. The mix of traditional patterns with this season’s bright colours and modern shapes offers an exciting blend of African culture with a luxurious and alluring styles.
