Spirited, simple Obiwon

BY OYINDAMOLA LAWAL
IT doesn’t matter where you are or what you do, but being well-dressed and looking good can never be something that’s too much to ask for.
Obiora Nwokolobia-Agu, popularly known as Obiwon in showbiz, is one dude with great talent, class and style. Over the years, he has been able to prove that he is a great vocalist. And there are several awards to show for it.
When it comes to fashion, Obiwon is one of the few men who are at the centrepieces of style, as his quick style tips indicate below

Let it fit
Please, make sure everything fits well. Most males wear clothes that are too large, or sometimes, too small. Make sure everything you wear is almost hugging your body. My style is making sure it fits; simple, yet not too trendy. It can be unconventional at times, but not weird.

Keep it simple
Key pieces and colours are gorgeous, but do not overdo it with accessories or colours; keep it simple and straight! The uniqueness of my style is that, it is spirited, simple, solid ... sometimes a blend of the urban and the traditional.

Change is key
Change is the way you view casual. Pair some pants with a colour shirt or get those pants with a nice sweater! A little pizzazz goes a long way! My favourite piece changes over time, but for now, it's the waist-coat; it's not too serious as a jacket; and can easily blend into a formal or informal mode.

Not everything has a brand name
You do not necessarily need to wear designers to look trendy and stylish. Sometimes, great clothes are made from little known designers.

Rock colours
Who says you are limited to dull colours; that is, obviously, of the past. Colours are for guys and rocking the one that best suits your body is a plus. My favourite colours are silver, grey, ash, white and black.  They have this unearthly feel, which are solid and stable appearance. I also love bright colours such as lemon green, yellow and lighter shades of other colours.

Watch it
When it comes to accessories, Obiwon, the ex-banker, loves watches and has a lot yet doesn’t buy them often. “My most cherished fashion piece is watch; I can't remember when last I bought one; I have always received them as gifts,” he discloses. “I can’t do without watch and band. I need to tell the time; hands would feel bare without them.”

His fashion faux pas
Obiwon discloses that he cannot be caught in any extremely popular fashion fad. “You get lost in the crowd. For me, fashion faux pas is unmatched colours, ill-fitted clothes and attention-seeking exposure.”

Masculine, alluring … Out is da bomb

OTU-EKONG Ukpanah is easy-going, with a good sense of humour and irresistibly biceps. His good masculine looks, described as ultra-sexy, list him among 100 African celebrities with ‘hot body’ in 2006 by Kenyan Tourism Journal and ranked 37th in Africa. He is one of Nigeria’s stylish celebs.
Honoured as Nigeria's Most Outstanding Male Model of the Year 2011 by the Nigerian Models Achievers Awards and Mode Men Magazine’s Nigerian Model of the Year 2008, he was nominated for Mode Men Magazine Model of the Year Award 2009; Nigerian Future Awards Model of the Year 2006; Face of Nobel Afrik 2005 to 2006, Face of Mon Ami Couture 2003 to 2004, Face of Kesse Jabari 2000 to 2002 and Face of Hugo Boss West Africa 2000.
His talent and strikingly good looks have taken him from runway to billboards, photography and cover pages of magazines.

Quick tips on Otu’s Style

Less is more
Fashion for guys follow the principles of 80 per cent vital and 20 per cent trivial items, though it’s a large part from being well-dressed and comes from knowing your fundamentals and being moderate.
Just like Otu, eliminate any excessive and useless fashion extras in your outfit. You can mix and match your pieces effortlessly.
“I am a simple dresser; I believe in simplicity. My style is jeans, T-shirts or shirts and occasionally, natives. I wear clothes for a living; so, whatever I put on, I believe I should be excused for it,” he says.

Boxers rock
Boxers are actually men’s must-have undergarments. For Otu, it is beyond an undergarment, but his favourite piece of clothing. He explains, “I sweat a lot on my backside and have to wear something down there. Moreover, it helps to ‘contain your asset,’ I believe you know what I mean.”

Smell nice
When it comes to scent, Otu loves Black by Kenneth Cole. “I like its strong fragrance and masculine feel. Whenever I wear it, I have this feeling of pure masculinity,” he enthuses.

Diesel ‘n’ Guess it
We all have our favourites. When it comes to designers, Diesel and Guess does the magic for Otu. The award-winning model discloses, “I guess some of their designs are rugged. Majority of my clothes are Diesel: Jeans, belts, shoes, slippers, T-shirts and sunglasses. Apart from that, every other thing goes, as far as it fits me. I don't really follow trends”. For accessory, Otu loves Guess. He adds, “I have three of their wrist watches.”

His fashion must-do
“I said earlier that I couldn’t be caught not wearing boxers. Others are slippers or shoes. I feel irritated each time I see people walk bear-footed. I can't just stand it,” he states.

Embrace it
One of Otu’s most cherished fashion items is gold bracelet that his twin brother sent to him from Italy. “I value all my stuff. There's this saying that, ‘you never know what you have until you lose it.’ For me not to loose any of my stuff, I cherish what I have,” he says.

Have less worries, rock it great
He shares his red carpet secrets, “I am a very easy-going person. As far as the colours fit, I'm good to go. I don't spend sleepless nights thinking or coordinating what to wear on a red carpet. I have so many things to worry about.”

Cool it ice
Otu’s favourite body product is Cool Ice Sure spray deodorant. He explains, “I like it because it doesn't draw sweat line on your fabric, even if that fabric is black and no matter how much you sweat.”

Be cool with colours
Otu is, indeed, a simple dresser; he doesn’t like bright colours, but some of his favourites are blue, black and brown.

Fashion faux pas
“Denrele's mode of dressing is a typical example. That kind of dressing is just too loud for me,” he says.

Trends come and go, but style is something one possesses for a lifetime. Fashion comes naturally while style is incorporated into ones daily life through numerous ways. Below are few tips that can help you embrace the style of Reze.

Colour it bold
Do not shy away from colours. Be playful with your look and bring in a zest of life by bringing forth an eclectic mix of colours into your otherwise dull wardrobe. Colours play major part in every man’s fashion. Men across the globe, including Reze have begun to integrate bolder coloured pieces into their everyday look and making a real statement with them.

Going gray, sporting silver
Embrace gray hair. Some say gray hair is a sign of aging and wisdom, but the simple physiology of graying hair has more to it than the chemical and physical changes occurring in man.  However, many believe you have to change your hairstyle when it goes gray, Reze has totally prove us wrong, as one can look stylish in gray hair. Embrace the silver. You’ve earned the right to be sexy whether or not you’re gray. Reze adds, “ the hair is natural, I really don't do anything except cut and comb it. Most times, I'm only reminded it’s there when people comment about it, because I don't get to see it.”

Style genius
Style must be a very personal thing and therefore should reflect your lifestyle and values. Some are vibrant with their taste while others simply show what they believe is appropriate for an occasion.
Don’t try too hard
Just like Reze, your look should not be forced, but relaxed. You should place comfort before fashion, instead of the other way around. Comfort is important both at the physical and emotional level. What is the point, if something is good-looking and not comfortable?

Quality
Don’t sacrifice quality while developing your personal style. There are certain pieces in a man’s wardrobe that are worth investing in. A well-tailored suit or a jacket will ‘shape’ itself to your body.

Dress to suit your occasion
A lot of people do it the wrong way, but remember there is time and place for everything. Dressing to suit the occasion is very important.

Barometer of taste
Without doubts, you would agree with me that accessories are barometer of taste. No wonder Reze invests in them. Your shoes, scarves, hats, ties, cufflinks, belts and wristwatches to mention a few highlight your attire and can lift your look from drab to fab; so, they have to be perfect. He says, “for accessories I love watches, my favourite is Rolex and Hublot.”

Go classic, wow people
A whole ensemble can be made interesting with the play of colour, proportion and styling. Wow people with your taste and individuality, not your spending. Designer’s clothes are great; they keep you in style and up on the current trends, but choose your pieces based on how they look on you, not just for the label. He enthuses, “I work with many designers, locally and internationally, so, it’s hard to say; but I doff my hat for Ozwald Boateng and what he's achieved so far.

Mix and match
Men’s clothing should be a blend of technology and tradition. The ability to mix and match make a man even more appealing. Play around with prints to dress your look up or down. Be bold. Go ahead and experiment as much as you please. The basic thumb rule is to match your leathers with your leathers and your fabrics with your fabrics.

Wear clothes that spell comfort
When dressing up, comfort should always be given utmost priority. Never wear clothes you do not feel at ease in. Clothes reflect your personality, so you should be comfortable in what you wear.

Always smell good
Fragrances are not just for occasions. However, it should not be overdone, because you would not want to end up smelling like a rose garden. A man’ good smell is a bonus to his being well dressed. You can go for Reze’s favourite, Gianni versace pour homme.

Good Shoes
The first thing often noticed in a man’s dressing are his shoes. A perfect pair of shoes completes a stylish look. Your shoes say a lot about how you pay attention to the minutest details.

Confidence
Finally, the most important component that would help you raise your style quotient is to carry your clothes with confidence and élan. Wear your outfit in a way that oozes grandeur and comfort, following there is no stopping you from being rated as the most stylish man.

Have your own identity
The greatest thing about being stylish is having your own identity. You don't need to look like everyone else or fit a certain mold; instead you need to figure out what makes you feel confident.

Body product
Just like Reze, use cocoa butter.

Be fit
Everyone wants to look fit and smart. For Reze, “I go to the gym, but mostly, when I'm out of the country, which is on monthly bases. Fortunately, I have a personal pool in my house in South Africa and also one at home in Lagos, so, I swim a lot to keep fit.”

Don’t die for it
Unlike others, Reze do not have any fashion pieces to die for. He says, “no fashion item is worth dying for, because there's nothing new under the sun; fashion keeps revolving. Today’s fashion faux pas is tomorrow’s vogue.”
