Tanya Walton Pratt Becomes Indiana’s First Black Federal Judge

Senator Evan Bayh has recommended that President Barack Obama name Marion County Superior Court Judge Tanya Walton Pratt to be a federal judge for the Southern District of Indiana. The move would make Pratt the first African-American federal judge in Indiana history.The Spelman College and Howard University School of Law graduate is the fourth woman to be named a federal judge in the state. Pratt, who has worked as a private practice lawyer, also has served as deputy public defender in the probate division of the Marion Superior Court. She was also named “Outstanding Judge of the Year” by the Indiana Coalition Against Sexual Assault.
