Like Christopher Kane, who began working for Donatella Versace while he was still completing his studies at Central Saint Martins, Bunmi Olaye, 28, who has just completed her BA degree at the University of East London, established her own label last year and has a celebrity client list which includes Mel B, Mischa Barton, Alesha Dixon, Estelle and Alex Curran, the super-WAG wife of England captain, Steven Gerrard.
Among more than 1, 000 students, from 35 fashion universities and colleges around the country, which are expected to showcase their creativity, drive and skills to impress an industry headhunter, Bunmi Alaye was selected to participate in the world's largest platform for the designers of tomorrow (Graduate Fashion Week). First day of the Graduate fashion week, Bunmi thrilled the audience with her captivating, creative, unique and mouth-watering designs. as music popped up, model strutted the runway covered in multi coloured pompoms and waving striped feathered.
Bunmi’s collection, inspired by the mysterious, men-only Leopard Masquerade cult of the Efik tribe in the Nigerian province of Calabar, mixed with references to the high-collars, tight waists and voluminous sleeves of the Victorian era, was the “star” of the University of East London’s catwalk show today.
Graduate Fashion Week continues until Wednesday night with a Gala show at which the winners of the Best Menswear, Best Womenswear and the River Island £20,000 Gold Award will be announced.
The chair of this year’s judging panel is the Italian designer, Alberta Ferretti.
